During the Easter service at Brixton SDA on April 4th, I reflected on Jesus’ third word from the cross: “Woman, behold your son… Behold your mother.” As one of the 7 Adventist Radio London Presenters on the day, looking at the seven last words of Jesus, I shared that in the midst of unimaginable suffering, Jesus paused to care for a personal, practical need — reminding us that true spirituality never excuses us from responsibility. Instead, it deepens our call to love.
This moment was more than an act of compassion; it marked the creation of a new kind of family. At the cross, Jesus redefined belonging — not by DNA or biology, but by discipleship and belief. This is why the church today calls one another Brother and Sister.
I also reminded the audience that real love acts immediately. Scripture tells us that “from that hour,” John took Mary into his home. No delay. No debate. Just lived obedience. This is the model for the church: a community where no one stands alone and every burden is shared.
The message for us today is simple yet profound: If Jesus cared for Mary’s needs while carrying the sins of the world, He certainly cares for the details of your life. Your struggles, loneliness, and heartaches matter deeply to Him.
As you reflect, consider:
- Who is your Mary? Someone God is calling you to support.
- Who is your John? Someone God has placed in your life as family, even without shared blood.
Because of the cross, we are never alone — we are part of a family formed in love, shaped by sacrifice, and held together by Christ Himself.
