In July 2025, I had the privilege of being closely involved in the planning, delivery, and celebration of Stevenage’s Vacation Bible School (VBS)—an unforgettable experience themed True North. The focus was simple yet powerful: helping children discover that Jesus is our constant guide in an ever-changing world.
From the earliest planning meetings to the final moments of graduation, this VBS was more than a programme. It became a community journey—bringing children, families, volunteers, and leaders together with a shared sense of purpose, faith, and excitement.
From Vision to Reality: Planning with Purpose
My involvement began during the planning stages, working alongside a dedicated local team to shape a VBS that was engaging, spiritually meaningful, and accessible to every child. Together, we were intentional about:
- Creating age-appropriate, high-energy Bible learning experiences
- Designing sessions that encouraged participation, curiosity, and creativity
- Supporting volunteers with clear structure, growing confidence, and strong spiritual outcomes
The True North theme provided a powerful framework. In a world where children are constantly navigating pressure, noise, and uncertainty, the message was clear and reassuring: Jesus never changes, and He always leads us in the right direction .
Execution Week: Faith in Action
When VBS week arrived, Stevenage came alive. The church space was transformed, the music was loud, the laughter contagious, and the energy unmistakable. Children didn’t just attend—they engaged.
Throughout the week, we saw children:
- Asking thoughtful and courageous questions about faith
- Stepping out of their comfort zones to lead, pray, and participate
- Building friendships across ages and backgrounds
What stood out most was how intentionally the programme created space for every child to shine—whether through drama, discussion, teamwork, creativity, or quiet reflection.
The wider community impact was also evident. Parents stayed to talk. Visitors returned each day. Conversations continued beyond the building. VBS became a genuine bridge between church and community, rooted in joy, trust, and authentic connection.
Graduation Day: A Moment That Mattered
One of the highlights of the week for me was delivering the sermonette at the VBS graduation. Standing before the children, their families, and the wider church community, I was reminded that this moment wasn’t about performance—it was about affirmation and commissioning.
The message centred on three simple truths:
- You are known and loved by God
- You have gifts that matter
- Jesus is your True North—not just for VBS week, but for life
Watching children proudly celebrate what they had learned, while families looked on with gratitude and joy, was deeply moving. It was clear that seeds of faith, confidence, and belonging had been planted.
Lasting Impact Beyond the Week
Stevenage VBS 2025 was a powerful reminder of why children’s ministry matters so deeply. When done intentionally, it:
- Builds faith foundations that last
- Empowers children as leaders, not just learners
- Strengthens the bond between church, home, and community
I’m grateful to have played a role in supporting this journey and incredibly proud of the Stevenage team for their commitment, creativity, and heart for children. This wasn’t just a successful event—it was a meaningful milestone.
As we continue to invest in children and young people, my prayer is that they will always remember where their True North lies.
